What does your waist size say about your health?

Sunday, June 22, 2008

The Nutrition Data Blog had a really good article about how your waist size can have an effect on your health. There are some tests you can do to determine what health issues you are at risk for.

I don't even have to take the test to do know that I'm at risk for diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and cancer. I have a really poor family health history, which is one of the main reasons I decided things needed to change (but I love my family just the same!)

After you have determined your BMI and waist circumference, you can go here to interpret what it means. After going through the steps - I determined that I am at a VERY HIGH risk of health issues, however, in March of this year, that test would have come out EXTREMELY HIGH. So I am thankful that I am now making the right choices and heading in the right direction.

And since we are in the testing mood, please check out this site to determine how many calories you would burn if you rested all day (BMR or RMR). I thought this was very educational - because I know about how many calories I eat a day and we all know that you want to burn more calories than you take in, right? So how many calories do I burn on the days I just sit on my keister??? (Not enough in the land of little to no metabolism!)

This website also has a lot of different tests you can do and very educational tools you can use to improve your health and fitness.

And finally - do you feel like you're stuck in a rut? I've felt that way for a while now - but a great post by the Thinking Woman really smacked me upside the head. I'm now choosing to be thankful and joyful about the life that I have and not get stuck in an emotional rut!

I hope that all of you have a blessed Sunday!

a lot of people forget about bmr, and thats why they will eat so few calories and get confused why they arent dropping weight.

congrats on lowering that risk level- keep it up!

Thanks for the shout-out! :-) I love the health calculators, they're fun -oops, I mean educational. :-) Okay, I'm a nerd. But I think they're fun, too.

Congratulations on the improvement, I think that's absolutely wonderful.
